Civic offices spaceThe Civic Offices presented all sorts of unique challenges from significant noise pollution from traffic in the immediate surroundings, steep topography extended across the site, to high, overlooking office windows. As well as acting as a buffer for noise pollution, an outer green belt of dense trees and shrubs disguises the large number of cars in the surrounding parking spaces to the west and south. It also provides a sense of security when people are seated on the curved, elongated bench. Having used my given colour Purple as a catalyst in my design approach, two walkways through this dense, mini – forest instils curiosity and mystery in the outsider, and provides a welcome distraction from the mundane, everyday walk from the car to the desk and vice-versa. Three large green islands provide alternative places to eat lunch in good weather.

One of which has been shaped into a large mound to somewhat take advantage of the shifting topography and earth from my design. On the West island of grass there are Niches cut into the raised levels. These spaces can be exploited as seating for people who want to talk to each other as they are backed by tall grasses. In the centre, there is a large, stone water feature that marks the divide between natural and man-made with jagged edges on one side and a smooth, straight-cut edge on the other. The crashing flower of water again combats unwelcome foreign noises in the space. Entrance to the building is gained through a timber pergola that becomes more complete the closer you get to the building. |
